We’ll pick you up this morning and take you to the Poroy train station to board your train to Aguas Calientes, the town at the base of Machu Picchu. Along the railway, you’ll enjoy stunning scenery all the way of the Andes and jungle. Your guide will meet you at the other end and take you to your hotel to check in before you go to a top restaurant for lunch.

This afternoon, you’ll have plenty of free time to explore the quaint town or visit the relaxing hot springs to unwind before your big day tomorrow. In the evening, you’ll have a tasty dinner and listen to a briefing from your guide before heading to bed early.

Your 2-day adventure begins today when we pick you up from your accommodation at an agreed time and drive you to the Poroy train station. The train will leave at 8:25 am, so you don’t need to be up too early. Your journey will take you to the small town of Aguas Calientes, at the base of the Machu Picchu Sanctuary.

This train journey is famed for being one of the most beautiful in the world and is one of the top experiences to enjoy while in Peru. You’ll be able to look out the windows all the way and observe stunning natural sights of the Andes and jungle landscapes as you slowly descend to 2,040 m / 6,692 ft.

After an incredible 4-hour journey, you’ll arrive in Aguas Calientes and be greeted by your guide who’ll walk with you to your hotel. There are no cars here so you need to go everywhere on foot.

At around 1:30 pm you’ll enjoy a tasty lunch in one of the best restaurants in town and then have some free time to yourself this afternoon to explore however you like. The town is very picturesque and sits in the middle of a deep, green valley with a rushing river running through the middle. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants to hang out at or you can take a hike to the hot springs where you can spend the afternoon relaxing before your big day tomorrow.

At 7:00 pm, you’ll enjoy a delicious dinner and your guide will fill you in on all that’ll happen tomorrow with a detailed briefing. Make sure you head to bed relatively early as you’ll be up before the sun tomorrow.

Wake up early to take the bus to Machu Picchu and beat the large crowds. You’ll have a 2-hour guided to all the important sectors before having some more time to explore the complex by yourself or enjoy one of the extra mountain hikes. You’ll need to make your way back down to Aguas Calientes around midday.

In the town, you’ll have some time to find a restaurant for lunch and explore a little more before heading to the train station. You’ll board the train back to Cusco. Once there, our private transport will take you back to your accommodation in the city.

To make the most of your visit to Machu Picchu, we like to get there bright and early to beat the large crowds. For this reason, we leave at 5:30 am after a nourishing breakfast to catch the bus up to the historical sanctuary. The ride is around 25 minutes long and follows a steep and winding path that provides you with some spectacular views of the surrounding mountains.

Once you reach the archaeological complex, you’ll start a 2-hour guided tour with your knowledgeable guide who’ll take you around all the most significant parts of Machu Picchu: The great Intiwatana, the Sun Temple, the urban sector, and the agricultural sector, among others.

Many locals thought of Machu Picchu to be a legend, but no one had seen it for a long time. Then in 1911, the explorer Hiram Bingham stumbled upon its remains. Machu Picchu stands at 2,430 m / 7,972 ft, in the middle of a tropical mountain forest, in an extraordinarily beautiful setting. On the eastern slopes of the Andes, the natural setting encompasses the upper Amazon basin with its rich diversity of flora and fauna.

After your tour, you’ll have plenty more time to explore the site by yourself. If you get tickets in advance, you’ll be able to hike either Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain at this point too. From both, you get an incredible view over the whole citadel. Alternatively, you can hike up to the Sun Gate or Inca Bridge without an extra ticket. At around 12 pm it’ll be time to start making your way back down to Aguas Calientes.

Once you’re back in the town, you’ll have some time to find a restaurant for lunch and be able to browse the shops in case you want to buy any souvenirs. You can also head up to the hot springs if you didn’t go yesterday or want to visit again. At around 4 pm, you’ll board the train that takes you to Cusco. At the station, we’ll transfer you back to your accommodation for some well-deserved rest.

  Before You Go

We want to make your trip to Peru as memorable and as easy as possible. In this section, you'll find speedy answers to all those questions you had about hiking in Peru with Salkantay Trekking in one place. Please read the following information carefully – it will help you with any questions about our services. Please read carefully the following information – it will help you with any questions you may have about our services.

Have another question that we haven’t answered here? Drop us a line and we will get back to you asap!

Briefing or Informative Meeting

All information meetings and briefings are held in our main office in Cusco (or your hotel) at 5:00 pm, one night before the tour begins. These meetings last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. If you’re unable to attend, you must coordinate another time by email, by phone or at the Salkantay Trekking office.

Trek Balance Payment (in Cusco)

The trek has to be paid for in full at most 7.30 pm one day before your departure (generally after the briefing).

It would be much appreciated if you pay the trek balance in cash US dollars or local currency at our office in Cusco. You can withdraw some money from several ATMs along Avenida Sol (either in US dollars or local Peruvian Soles). You can pay by credit card or PAYPAL online, but you will have to pay an 8% service charge, charged by VISA and PAYPAL. We do not accept bank checks or payment of the balance by traveler’s checks.

Can I store my luggage at your office?

Of course! During the trip, your main luggage can be stored at our office (you can organize it with us on the briefing day or by email) or at your hotel, both free of charge.

Any equipment that you won’t need on the trek can be stored safely in your hotel. Nearly every hotel will provide this service. Don’t leave items of value with your bags; put them in the hotel safe and obtain an itemized receipt (in the unlikely case of theft, many insurance companies require that you have a copy of the receipt itemizing everything). It’s best to put items such as credit cards inside a sealed, signed envelope for extra peace of mind.

Pick up of guests

Salkantay Trekking can pick you up from your hotel, as long as it’s in the Historical Center of Cusco. Your guide will coordinate the pickup time in the briefing session, but please keep in mind that the time may vary between 30 and 45 minutes due to traffic.

Cusco is an old city, meaning it has many narrow cobbled streets. Some hotels and Airbnbs may be located on streets without access to cars or on long, steep slopes, making it difficult to transport luggage. We strongly recommend that you book accommodation with good access.

Return to Cusco

Returning from Machu Picchu requires quite a bit of logistics, but don’t worry. Everything is included in your tour!

  • In Machu Picchu, you’ll board a bus that’ll take you for 25 minutes to the small city of Aguas Calientes. The buses are boarded according to arrival.
  • In Aguas Calientes, you’ll board a train to Ollantaytambo (or Poroy). Your guide will give you the train tickets where the boarding time will be shown. Make sure you’re on the platform 30 minutes early. The train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo takes 1:45 hours.
  • Once you arrive at the station, our representative, identified with the Salkantay Trekking clothing, will be waiting to transfer you to Cusco or directly to your hotel. The trip from Ollantaytambo to Cusco takes 1:30 hours.
  • In Cusco, depending on your hotel’s location, we’ll take you to a smaller car from our company (Hyundai H1) to transfer you faster to your hotel.

Group Tours

Group tours are made up of different types of people, then physical conditions and ages can vary. By agreeing to be part of a group tour, you also accept that some people may be faster or slower than you. Therefore, each person can go at their own pace on the route. It may be the case that a group wishes to modify the tour; however, the guide will be the one who decides, after consulting with all the participants, if such modifications are possible.

Strikes and demonstrations

Strikes and demonstrations are usually common in Peru, and this may interrupt some of our tours. Roads can be blocked, and train tracks can be taken over. However, we will try to keep your trip as originally planned, even if it means leaving the night before the scheduled date. Under these circumstances, tours may also be canceled. In case of changes or cancellations, everything will be coordinated with you by our operations department. Your safety is our highest priority, and our decisions will be made to protect it.

Lost objects

Please pay attention to where you leave your things and remember to take everything once you leave our transport, accommodation or restaurants. You’re the only one responsible for your objects during the tour.
