Salkantay VIII Cleaning Campaign

"Salkantay te quiero limpio"

The Salkantay Mountain is the highest representative of the Vilcabamba Mountain Range; however, in the last 40 years, 63.6% (21.91 km²) of its glacier surface has been lost, according to figures from the National Water Authority (ANA). In this regard, it is necessary to promote environmental conservation and sustainability practices that benefit local communities and protect the ecological balance of the Salkantay Mountain.

Climate change is a reality, and Edgar Catunta, the founder of Salkantay Trekking, has taken it into account since the early years of the company. Therefore, annual cleaning campaigns, workshops on solid waste management, and various environmental training sessions are conducted to promote environmental awareness and reduce the carbon footprint.

On December 1 of 2023, “The Salkantay VIII Environmental Cleaning Campaign” took place with the aim of cleaning the area around the Salkantay Mountain (Mollepata, Challancha, Soraypampa, Humantay, Abra de Salkantay) and raising awareness about the importance of caring for nature while engaging in outdoor activities.

More than 80 collaborators took part in the event, including tour guides, chefs, muleteers, drivers, porters, and all office members. The activities started in Mollepata, and the meeting point was at Sky Camp, located in Soraypampa, where all collaborators gathered. Two routes were assigned: the path to Laguna Humantay and the route to Abra Salkantay. Subsequently, cleaning, collection, and inspection of each route were carried out meticulously for over 7 hours. Sticks, gloves, and sacks were used for this purpose, aiming to collect the maximum amount of solid waste. The activity concluded successfully with the collection of 27 bags of solid waste, including glass bottles from alcoholic beverages, plastic bottles, and other debris found along the way.

Salkantay Trekking is a company committed to environmental protection and the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015. This commitment has enabled the company to have a social, economic, and environmental impact on society by promoting sustainable and ecological tourism.
