I’ve always dreamed of delving into Inca history and discovering stunning landscapes. Finally, I found the perfect adventure for me: the Choquequirao Trek. This hike took me through the breathtaking Peruvian Andes to the Inca citadel of Choquequirao, known as the “sister of Machu Picchu” for its beauty and architectural similarities. I felt an indescribable excitement thinking about the authentic and magical experience that awaited me, exploring the roots of an ancient civilization and delighting in spectacular views.
Choquequirao, which means “cradle of gold” in Quechua, captivated me with its impressive architecture and natural landscape of unparalleled beauty. The agricultural terraces, ceremonial plazas, and complex irrigation systems were a testament to the advanced ingenuity of the Incas. As I explored its structures, I felt transported to a glorious past, where every stone told a story. If you’re looking for a unique adventure that combines history, culture, and nature, the Choquequirao Trek is an experience you can’t miss.
Choquequirao Short Trip: 4 Days and 3 Nights
The journey to Choquequirao was a challenging trek for my body and spirit. I opted for the short trip option: 4 days and three nights. I traversed diverse landscapes during the hike, from lush valleys to steep mountain slopes.
As I advanced, I observed unique flora and fauna and interacted with local communities that still keep many Inca traditions and customs alive. Each step brought me closer to the citadel, and the effort was richly rewarded upon arrival, where the majesty of the ruins and the natural surroundings left me breathless.
What Can You Expect from This Hike?

On this beautiful route, day by day, I experienced and explored the wonders of nature. As I advanced, I immersed myself in the culture, the past, and the impressive nature.
Here’s my detailed experience of this route; get inspired to be part of this unique experience!
Day 1 Cusco | Capuliyoc – Chiquisca – Playa Rosalinas – Santa Rosa
You’ll enjoy this first day contemplating the incredible landscape of the Apurímac River and the valley before reaching Santa Rosa, where you’ll spend the night.
Day details | |
Meals | Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. |
Accommodation | Camp |
Difficulty | Moderate to challenging |
Walking distance | 15 km / 9.32 miles |
Walking Times | 6-7 hours |
Starting Elevation | 2,890 m / 9,482 ft |
Altitude of the camp | 1,970 m / 6,463 ft |
My epic journey began at 4:30 a.m. when I was picked up from my accommodation in Cusco and driven to Capuliyoc in private transport for five hours. I enjoyed spectacular views of the snow-capped Salkantay and Humantay mountains along the way. When we arrived at Capuliyoc (2,890 m / 9,482 ft), I had a delicious breakfast and met the cook and the muleteers who would be part of my trekking team; they ensured that my belongings safely reached each campsite and provided me with meals.
Once I started walking, I passed through the beautiful landscapes of the Apurímac Canyon, descending through a vast valley for three hours. Along the way, I enjoyed magnificent views of the two giant mountains, Padreyoc and Qoriwayrachina. Then, I arrived at my lunch spot in Chiquisca (1,900 m / 6,234 ft).
Once complete and revitalized, I continued to the bottom of the valley for another hour and fifteen minutes, known as Playa Rosalina (1,500 m / 4,921 ft). Here, I faced the torrent of the Apurímac River, which means “God who speaks” in Quechua. The water features class V rapids, perfect for canoeing or rafting. Finally, I made the last two-and-a-half-hour ascent to reach Santa Rosa (1,970 m / 6,463 ft), my first campsite. There, I enjoyed a delicious dinner before bed for a well-deserved rest.
Day 2 Santa Rosa | Marampata – Choquequirao Archaeological Complex – Marampata
You’ll hike to Marampata this morning and enjoy incredible panoramic views, then follow the trail to Choquequirao. Remember to save some energy because you’ll return to Marampata for the night.
Day details | |
Meals | Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. |
Accommodation | Camp |
Difficulty | Challenging |
Walking distance | 10 km / 6.21 miles |
Walking Times | 6 hours |
Starting Elevation | 3,050 m / 10,007 ft |
Altitude of the camp | 2,900 m / 9,514 ft |
In the morning, I was served a hearty breakfast to give me the energy needed for the hike. Then, I set off around 5:30 a.m. and zigzagged uphill for three hours to Marampata (2,900 m / 9,514 ft). There, I was amazed by the incredible landscape and had the opportunity to capture some shots of the canyon and the snow-capped peaks. After a short break and organizing my things, I walked for another hour and thirty minutes to the Choquequirao complex (3,050 m / 10,007 ft).
That day, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in the surroundings and let the energy of this ancient site take over me. I took my time and discovered every part of the complex located in the deep canyon. The stunning landscapes that awaited me were even better than I imagined. My guide took me around the entire site and taught me about the history and other exciting stories. Choquequirao is much larger than Machu Picchu, although experts believe that only 40% is currently uncovered, so there is likely much more to explore. I visited plazas, temples, and impressive terraces, which made me wonder how the ancient civilization could build such a feat on top of the mountains.
I didn’t miss some of the essential parts of the complex, like the white stone llamas built to protect the vital mountain overlooking the area known as Apu Qoriwayrachina. Choquequirao remains a mystery in many ways, and in the coming years, we will learn more. At noon, I took a break at this magnificent site to enjoy lunch. In the afternoon, I returned to my camp in Marampata to enjoy another great dinner and rest for the night. Once the sun went down, I noticed that the night sky was filled with stars and constellations. I contemplated their significance before going to bed.
Day 3 Marampata | Santa Rosa – Playa Rosalinas – Chiquisca (Cocamasana)
You’ll depart from Marampata to observe more impressive landscapes and refresh yourself in the calm waters of Playa Rosalinas. Later, you’ll arrive at the Chiquisca hamlet to spend the night.

Walking Times | 7 hours |
Starting Elevation | 3,050 m / 10,007 ft |
Altitude of the camp | 1,900 m / 6,234 ft |
I started the day with another hearty breakfast before embarking on the return journey after enjoying beautiful moments during my tour of Choquequirao. I retraced my steps to Santa Rosa (1,970 m / 6,463 ft), where I stopped to visit a local family’s farm. They cultivated sugarcane, which they used to prepare Cambray, a popular local liquor.
After enjoying a delicious lunch and a short break, I continued the descent to Playa Rosalina (1,500 m / 4,921 ft), where I refreshed my feet in the calm waters of the Apurímac River before ascending. I continued the return path, but this time, I started to climb for about an hour and fifteen minutes until reaching the warm Chiquisca (1,900 m / 6,234 ft). There, I spent the night and enjoyed a tasty dinner while talking with my trekking companions about all the exciting things we witnessed that day. I was more than ready for bed when the time came.
Day 4 Chiquisca | Capuliyoc – Saywite Monolith – Conoc Hot Springs – Cusco
You will walk to Capuliyoc, and at this point, you will bid farewell to the trekking team before heading to the Saywite Monolith. Then, you will explore the Conoc hot springs to relax. In the afternoon, you will return to Cusco on our private transport.

Meals | Breakfast and lunch |
Difficulty | Challenging |
Walking distance | 8 km / 4.97 miles |
Walking Times | 4 hours |
Maximum altitude | 3,500 m / 11,483 ft |
Today, I enjoyed the last breakfast of my journey while listening to the roar of the Apurímac River. Then, I started early to avoid walking under the blazing sun. I took a deep breath for the last time and let Mother Nature guide me on my final stretch of the hike back to Capuliyoc (2,890 m / 9,482 ft).
Once there, I bid farewell to my trekking team, who had accompanied me. Afterward, it was time to board the private transport to visit the colossal rock, the Saywite Monolith. While there, I learned about its great religious importance to the Incas and its focus on water.
After my brief history lesson, I headed to the Conoc hot springs and enjoyed the relaxing waters to soothe my tired muscles after the long hike. I savored my last lunch there before continuing in the private transport back to Cusco. I made the most of my final chance to observe the beautiful snow-capped mountains and took memorable photos of the incredible landscape. I was physically tired then, but I felt such a sense of satisfaction and achievement that none mattered. Later, I arrived in Cusco and was taken to the door of my accommodation to relax and rest as much as I needed.
