JUNE 1: Pachamama Offering
The official kickoff of the Cusco Festivals starts with a traditional ceremony known as the “Pachamama Offering.” We gather authorities, folks, and visitors to pay homage to Mother Earth, presenting various offerings and expressing gratitude for her abundance and protection. The ceremony is presided over by Andean priests called “Yachayniyoq,” who kneel in front of the “ushnu” or ceremonial center in the heart of Cusco’s Main Square. During this event, the main authorities give thanks to Pachamama and seek good omens for our land’s jubilee month.
JUNE 3: Launch Ceremony of the Festivities of Patron Saint San Cristóbal
The vibrant San Cristóbal neighborhood comes together to kick off the festivities in honor of its patron saint, San Cristóbal. This event officially marks the beginning of the celebrations and is filled with dances, songs, music, and deep religious devotion. The ceremony takes place in the cozy square of this traditional neighborhood. Formerly known as Qolqampata, San Cristóbal boasts remarkable architectural treasures.
JUNE 6: Pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Señor de Qoyllur Rit’i
The pilgrimage to the Señor de Qoyllur Rit’i takes place between May and June and stands as one of the largest indigenous festivals in the Americas. Thousands of people gather in the Sinakara Valley to make their way to the Sanctuary of Señor de Qoylluriti, a sacred place nestled in the Ausangate snow-capped mountain, soaring at an altitude of 4,700 meters above sea level. Brace yourself for temperatures as low as -4°C in this district of Ocongate, in the province of Quispicanchis.
Approximately 10,000 individuals from different locations in Cusco, divided into eight nations representing their original towns—Paucartambo, Quispicanchi, Canchis, Acomayo, Paruro, Tawantinsuyo, Anta, and Urubamba—participate in the pilgrimage. As the event unfolds, processions with crosses take place, fireworks light up the sky, and melodies and dances ascend towards the snowy peak of the mountain.
Faith and devotion intertwine with the energy of the dancers and musicians accompanying the procession. The pilgrimage showcases a myriad of cultural expressions, featuring diverse groups of dancers such as the Chauchos, Qollas, Ukukus, and pablitos or pabluchas, representing various mythical characters. This pilgrimage ritual is deeply connected to the fertility of the land, the worship of the Apus (mountain deities), and is symbolized externally by the image of Christ.

Chiriuchu is composed of ingredients such as oven-roasted guinea pig, ch’arki (dried meat), boiled hen, accompanied by wheat fritters, toasted corn, cheese, blood sausage, seaweed, chorizo, fish roe, and rocoto chili pepper. It’s a true culinary delight that you can’t miss during the festivities.
June 8th: Traditional Corpus Christi Procession in Cusco
Experience the tradition of Corpus Christi in Cusco with the impressive procession of fifteen saints and virgins. These revered religious icons arrive from different places and organize various processions that culminate at the Cusco Cathedral, where they pay homage to the Body of Christ. The images of the patron saints are magnificently adorned with jewelry, flowers, and precious metals, wearing new outfits each year. Each saint is accompanied by their stewards, musicians, and dancers, creating a spectacle of worship and devotion.
The origin of the Cusco Corpus Christi dates back to the time of the Incas, who used to procession the mummies of their high rulers before the Inti Raymi festival. However, the Spanish, impressed by what they witnessed, took advantage of this festivity in their process of evangelization. Thus, in 1572, they replaced the procession of the mummies with the procession of the fifteen saints and virgins.
During these festivities, you can enjoy the majesty of the traditional dances, elaborate costumes, and expressions of faith that fill the streets of the imperial city. It is a unique opportunity to admire the devotion and fervor of the people of Cusco. Don’t miss the chance to immerse yourself in this celebration full of tradition and spirituality.

This impressive engineering marvel, spanning 30 meters, is constructed with straw and stone. The bridge renewal festival takes place in the district of Quehue.
During this event, community members gather to dismantle the bridge built the previous year, while women and children collect straw or “ichu” to make the foundation of the new bridge. For four days, a ritual ceremony is performed to reweave the bridge. The completion of this process is celebrated with food and traditional dances in a joyous folk festival.
