Currently, there are 5 established Machu Picchu circuits to explore the Historic Sanctuary. These circuits are one-way routes, meaning once you start a circuit, you cannot go back or switch to another route during the tour.

It is important to note that there are no bathrooms inside Machu Picchu. Therefore, if you need to use the bathrooms during your visit, it is recommended to do so before entering the citadel. Fortunately, bathrooms are available located near the entrance (control checkpoint) of Machu Picchu, where you can use these facilities before starting your tour.

NOTE: There will be a designated circuit if you are trekking to an additional mountain. If you purchase a “Llaqta Machu Picchu” ticket to visit only the town, you can choose one of the first 4 circuits to visit during your time there.

Machu Picchu Circuit 1:

Circuit 1 is ideal for those wondering what Machu Picchu is or visiting the citadel for the first time. It is also known as the short-high route. This circuit covers both the lower and upper parts of Machu Picchu, passing through the impressive Inca terraces. Machu Picchu entry tickets are scheduled in one-hour intervals, starting from 6:00 am until 3:00 pm. When purchasing your entrance ticket, you must select a specific time to avoid any inconvenience and ensure an organized visit. Remember that each ticket is personal and non-transferable, so entering the correct name, surname, and document number for each passenger is crucial.

Where to buy Machu Picchu Tickets? 

There are 3 ways to get the Machu Picchu ticket:

Booking in advance online

This is one of the easiest ways to acquire your Machu Picchu tickets. Visit the Machu Picchu official site and follow the instructions on the screen to generate a reservation, completing all your personal information. Once the reservation is generated, you will be assigned a reservation number. You will receive an email with a button to “invoice” and receive your ticket.

Before your ticket becomes valid, you must complete the payment:

• With a card online 
• In cash at Banco de la Nación in any city in Peru. 
• In cash or with a card at the Ministry of Culture on Garcilaso or Maruri streets in Cusco.

In-person in Cusco, Peru (not recommended) 

At the Ministry of Culture on Garcilaso S/N street in Cusco:

The office is close to Plaza Regocijo. Look for glass doors, stone walls, and a sign that says “Boletos a Machu Picchu.” It is called “Museo Casa Garcilaso”. It is open from 7 am to 7 pm from Monday to Saturday. 

At the Ministry of Culture on Maruri #340 street in Cusco:

It is called “Dirección Desconcentrada de Cultura de Cusco” and is located in the “Palacio Inka del Kusikancha.” It is open from 7 am to 7 pm from Monday to Saturday.

Remember: Until you arrive in Cusco and go to one of the offices, you may not find available tickets for your chosen date.

Important Notes about Machu Picchu Tickets 

• Tickets are NOT sold at the entrance of Machu Picchu. It is necessary to purchase them in advance, without exceptions. 
• Machu Picchu tickets can no longer be purchased in the municipality of Aguas Calientes. You must buy the entrance tickets before traveling to Aguas Calientes. You could also buy online once you are there, but availability is unlikely with such short notice. 
• You MUST present your printed ticket at the entrance gate of Machu Picchu Archaeological Park. Digital tickets are not accepted. 
• You MUST be at the entrance gate during the 60-minute time slot printed in the upper left corner of your ticket. Otherwise, you will not be allowed entry.

Machu Picchu New Rules 2024

When visiting this World Heritage Site, it is important to comply with the following rules and restrictions in Machu Picchu to ensure a smooth trip and protect this ancient site:

• Make sure to be accompanied by a tour guide upon entry. The guide must accompany you throughout your entire visit from start to finish. 
• Each group of visitors must not exceed 16 people. 
• Show your ticket and original passport upon entry. 
• Stay on the designated trails and do not stray from them. 
• Avoid feeding the wildlife present in the sanctuary. 
• Avoid making loud noises such as shouting, whistling, or clapping. Do not litter; take all your belongings with you. 
• Avoid leaning on the walls or structures of the site. 
• Smoking or vaping is prohibited within the premises. 
• The use of drones is not allowed within the area. 
• Obscene acts are not tolerated within the site. 
• Street vending is not allowed within the citadel. 
• Avoid jumping, flipping, or engaging in other activities that disturb the natural environment.

*Please note that the rules may be subject to changes, so it is recommended to obtain updated information before your visit.

Restrictions within Machu Picchu

• The Sun Gate and the Temple of the Moon have been closed since the COVID-19 pandemic and have not reopened since July 2022. Only hikers entering the Inca Trail can access the Sun Gate. 
• Intiwatana, or the Inca Solar Clock, is open from 7 to 10 in the morning (circuit 2 only). 
• Kuntur Wasi, or the Temple of the Condor, is open from 10:00 to 13:00 (circuits 2 and 4).
•  Inti Wasi, or the Temple of the Sun, is open from 13:00 to 16:00 (circuits 3 and 4). 
• Circuit 1 and 2 share an entrance, and circuit 3 and 4 share an entrance. You cannot switch from one circuit to another without leaving the park and re-entering with a new ticket (previously reserved). 
• You cannot repeat the circuit you are in once you have reached the end. The end of each circuit is the exit gate, and you will be asked to leave the park when you reach it. You cannot reverse the circuit or backtrack for any reason. 

Prohibited items in Machu Picchu: What you need to know

Here is a list of items that are not allowed to be taken into Machu Picchu according to the new restrictions:

• Tripods, stands, or selfie sticks used for cameras or cellphones are not permitted. 
• Backpacks or bags exceeding 5 kilograms in weight are not allowed. 
• Alcoholic beverages, paints, aerosols, or other illegal substances that may cause disorder or damage to the archaeological site are prohibited. 
• Musical instruments, megaphones, and speakers are not authorized. 
• If you are traveling with young children, strollers are not allowed; it is recommended to use baby carriers. 
• Sharp objects or firearms are strictly prohibited. When taking iconic photographs of Machu Picchu, banners, posters, or advertising signs are not allowed. 
• Walking sticks with metal tips are also not allowed; sticks with rubber tips are recommended if necessary.

What are the penalties for violating rules in Machu Picchu?

Things to Do in Machu Picchu: Additional Tips

1. If you still want more, you can visit the small Manuel Chávez Ballón Site Museum, which displays artifacts found in the Machu Picchu citadel. A picturesque botanical garden accompanies it. It is not located within the archaeological site. You must walk for 20-30 minutes (1.7 km) along the Urubamba River from Aguas Calientes to find it at Km 112 of the train tracks near the Ruinas Bridge. It opens every day from 9:00 to 16:00. Admission with a passport or ID is free from 12:00 to 16:00 (subject to changes).

2. You can also visit the Machu Picchu Butterfly House near the museum. It is dedicated to the conservation and study of butterflies. It is open every day from 8:30 to 17:30, but the butterflies are most active in the morning. The entrance fee is 10 soles and includes a guided tour.

3. Another recommendation would be to take a nice walk in the Mandor Gardens Botanical Garden. It is a beautiful 1 km walk with a deeper purpose: the conservation of local flora and fauna and reforestation. Walking through the forest, you will see amazing landscapes and conveniently placed signs identifying the unique plants growing there. At the end of the walk, you will be rewarded with a beautiful waterfall and a swimming hole. It is open from 7:00 in the morning to 5:00 in the afternoon every day.

FAQs about Machu Picchu

How far in advance to book my Machu Picchu?

You should book as far as possible, especially if you want to hike an additional mountain.

During the low season (rainy season – November to April), you should book the basic Llaqta de Machu Picchu ticket at least one week in advance. During the high season (dry season – May to October), you should book at least one and a half months in advance, especially in June and July.

Book Huayna Picchu tickets at least four months in advance and Huchuy Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain at least one month in advance. 

Will I be kicked out once the time limit is up?

No, no system identifies who belongs to each time slot once inside the park.

Are there any fines or surcharges if I leave the park after my time limit?

No, there are no surcharges.

Can I purchase more than one ticket on the same day?

Yes, you can buy a morning and afternoon tickets if you want to spend the whole day in the citadel.

Can I hire a guide once I arrive at Machu Picchu?

Yes, there are certified tour guides outside the entrance of Machu Picchu if you want to hire one on-site.

What if I want to hike all 3 additional mountains?

You must purchase 3 different entrance tickets to Machu Picchu at different time slots.

Can I purchase Machu Picchu 2025 tickets if it’s still 2024? 

Tickets are available from December 2024. However, at Salkantay Trekking, you can purchase your ticket well in advance. Just buy your ticket in advance. Your Machu Picchu ticket will be received in December, ready to be printed and used. 

Can I revisit Machu Picchu on another day with the same ticket?

No, the ticket is only valid for the date and time slot printed on it.

Is there a bathroom in Machu Picchu?

There is a restroom that you can pay 2 soles to use, but it is outside the entrance gate. You cannot exit to use the restroom and then re-enter the site.

Can I buy food or water in Machu Picchu?

No, there are no restaurants or shops inside Machu Picchu. There is a fine restaurant in front of the entrance gates.

Is there accommodation in Machu Picchu?

There are no hotels inside Machu Picchu or nearby. All accommodations are in the town of Aguas Calientes.

Is Machu Picchu suitable for children?

Certainly. The only age limit is that children under 12 cannot climb Huayna Picchu mountain. The Machu Picchu citadel is a great place to explore with children!

Can I camp inside Machu Picchu?

No, camping or overnight stays are not allowed within the National Park.

If I am doing the Inca Trail, can I hike any additional mountain trails in Machu Picchu?

Inca Trail hikers are only designated access to Circuit 3. Reserve another mountain or circuit entrance ticket if you want to do another circuit or an extra hike.

Can I visit Machu Picchu if I have limited mobility?

Yes, it is best to choose Circuit 3 for your visit. It covers the lower route of the citadel and involves less walking and fewer stairs. It is important to note that the use of crutches is not allowed.

There is a special entrance for people with disabilities, and Machu Picchu is wheelchair accessible, although you may need assistance from a friend to navigate some parts of the circuit. The site also has supportive staff available to help. People with disabilities also receive a 50% discount on ticket purchases (with a disability certificate).

Do I need to print my ticket, or can I use a digital ticket?

You must physically print your ticket. A digital ticket will NOT allow you to enter Machu Picchu.

Can I purchase a Machu Picchu entrance ticket in Aguas Calientes?

Technically, you could purchase a ticket online from Aguas Calientes and have it printed, but there likely won’t be that type of last-minute availability. Buying the tickets in Cusco before traveling or in advance online would be better. There is no physical ticket booth in Aguas Calientes, and tickets are not sold at the entrance of Machu Picchu.

Is it true that my passport can be stamped at Machu Picchu?

Yes, you can obtain a free “Wonder of the World” stamp in your passport before crossing the entrance gate to Machu Picchu. 

Do I need to hire a guide to enter Machu Picchu?
