Day 1: The Beginning of the Adventure
The sun had not yet peeked over the horizon, but it pulled me from my slumber when I gently tapped on my hotel door. It was time to embark on the wild journey towards Salkantay Mountain. Excited and excited, I made my way to the meeting point, where a comfortable transport awaited us, ready to take us to where our journey would begin.
The road to Mollepata was a succession of landscapes plucked from a dream. As we progressed, the sun timidly began to illuminate the sky, gradually revealing the majesty of the Andes stretching before us. We made a brief stop for an energizing breakfast, and then we were at Challacancha, the starting point of our adventure.
There, I met the brave muleteers and skilled cooks who would accompany us. I checked my luggage one last time, ensuring I had everything necessary for the days ahead, and then we began. The first stage of our hike took us through a valley of glaciers, following an ancient Inca water channel. With each step, I could feel the earth’s energy beneath my feet, reminding me we were mere visitors in this vast and majestic landscape.
After three hours of moderate hiking, we arrived at Soraypampa, our home for the first night. The Sky Camp welcomed us with open arms, offering breathtaking views and unparalleled comforts, situated at an altitude of 3,900 m (12,795 feet). After a well-deserved lunch, we prepared for our first excursion: Humantay Lake.
The journey to the lagoon was a test of endurance and determination. Still, every step was worth it when we finally arrived and beheld the majesty of its turquoise waters, reflecting the brilliance of the Humantay Glacier. There, amidst the Andes, I felt small but connected to something greater than myself.
Dinner under the starry sky was the perfect epilogue to a day filled with emotions and challenges. From my igloo at the Sky Camp, I gazed at the stars and immersed myself in the tranquility of the night, feeling part of something greater than everyday life.
And so, with a heart full of adventure and a mind open to what would come, I surrendered to sleep, ready for what the next day had in store for me.
DAY 2: The Breathtaking Abra Salkantay and Descent into the Tropical Forest
In the morning, you will wake up to the day’s first rays and behold the Apu Salkantay while enjoying an energizing coca tea. Afterward, you will have a nutritious breakfast before embarking on the approximately 7 km (about three hours) journey towards the highest route point, the Abra Salkantay (4,630 m / 15,190 ft). It’s a challenging ascent along the “Path of the 7 Serpents,” named for its winding trail. Once at the top, you will appreciate the most magnificent view over the surrounding valleys, as well as Salkantay Mountain, located right in front of you (6,271 m / 20,574 ft), which is the second highest in the Cusco region, considered an Apu (Inca deity). You can also observe the Humantay, Tucarnuay, and Pumasillo mountains. After enjoying the views and rest, you will begin the descent (7 km / 4.35 miles) to our lunch spot at Huayracmachay (3,850 m / 12,631 ft). This stretch of the trail is rocky and steep but offers spectacular views of the surrounding valley.
After a revitalizing lunch, you will enter the boundary of the tropical forest, also known as the “cloud forest.” This leg of the journey covers a distance of 9.5 km / 5.9 miles and lasts approximately three and a half hours. Along the way, you will enjoy the lush greenery of the tropical forest and witness the rapid and drastic environmental change from the Andes to the Amazon. You will see colorful landscapes, unique wildlife, and native plants and feel the climate becoming much warmer.
After a long day of hiking, you will be delighted to arrive at Collpapampa to spend the night. Finally, we will serve you a hearty meal before resting at our exclusive Mountain Sky View Campsite.
Just like in the times of our ancestors, our commitment is to our Pachamama (Mother Earth) and the Apus (Sacred Mountains). Our Mountain Sky View camp is our novelty this year, and it is with great pleasure that we prepare this place for all those seeking a glamping experience amidst a life experience. It is located in a place surrounded by tropical mountains and rocky rivers under the shining stars.
DAY 3: Living the Coffee Experience
Today, we will start the day around 6:00 a.m. with hot tea and breakfast before leaving the camp. Then, we will walk through the Santa Teresa Valley until we reach our first destination, La Playa. During the hike, we will have a more leisurely walk, with more descents than ascents, while immersing ourselves in the lush landscape of rivers, waterfalls, orchids, and various plantations: banana, coffee, and avocado. Additionally, you may be lucky to see Peru’s national bird, the “Cock-of-the-Rock.”
At La Playa, we will enjoy lunch before heading for an hour to Lucmabamba (2,000 m / 6,562 ft), where our camp is located. In the afternoon, you will have free time to explore the tropical surroundings and visit an organic coffee farm, perfect for coffee lovers. Even if you are not a fan of a cup of coffee, the aroma in the air is delightful. This is the primary agricultural industry of the jungle that exports products to the United States, Asia, and Europe. You will also visit avocado and orange plantations.
After this incredible experience, you will head to the Cocalmayo hot springs for a comforting bath and relaxation after several days of hiking. You will take a break and feel the tranquility of the surroundings. Later, you will return to Lucmabamba to spend the night in our Jungle Domes. As you rest, you will be able to listen to the different sounds of nature and feel in harmony with Mother Earth.
From the comfort of our Jungle Domes, you will be in absolute connection with the nature surrounding you. Immerse yourself in this green environment while listening to the whisper of the wind, the rain, the flora, and the fauna of the place.
DAY 4: The First View of Machu Picchu
After a good breakfast, I prepared for a new day of adventures on the Inca Trail! With my boots securely laced and backpack ready, I began the ascent towards Llactapata. During two hours of walking, I was amazed by the views that opened before me, with the Santa Teresa valley spreading out at my feet. I encountered an Incan archaeological treasure when I reached Llactapata (2,700 m / 8,858 ft). From this privileged point, I glimpsed for the first time the majestic silhouettes of Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu. My guide shared the fascinating history of the Incas while I captured every moment with my camera to share these experiences with my loved ones back home.
After soaking in the grandeur of Llactapata, I began the descent towards the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. For an hour and a half, the trail led me through breathtaking and historically rich landscapes. Upon arriving at Aobamba, I had a well-deserved rest and enjoyed a delicious lunch before continuing my journey towards Hidroeléctrica.
The stretch towards Hidroeléctrica (1,800 m / 5,906 ft) was spectacular. I was amazed by an imposing artificial waterfall 250 meters in height that generated electricity for the entire city of Cusco. Once in Hidroeléctrica, I boarded the train to Aguas Calientes. During the journey, I could delight in the trail’s best landscapes.
During the journey, we were informed that the hike along the Llactapata trail is not 100% guaranteed during the rainy season for safety reasons. When there are frequent heavy rains, this trail can become very dangerous. This is valuable information for any traveler planning a new adventure.
Upon arriving in Aguas Calientes, a cozy small town, I headed to an exclusive restaurant to enjoy a comforting dinner. After a day full of emotions, I settled into a comfortable hotel, ready to rest and recharge for the big day awaiting me at dawn.
Day 5: Finally at Machu Picchu!
Today is the big day I’ve been waiting for throughout the hike! Finally, the time has come to visit Machu Picchu, one of the Seven Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I woke up early to ensure I arrived before the crowds invaded the site, eager to enjoy the serenity of dawn in this special place.
I arrived at the Inca citadel by bus and marveled at the majesty of Machu Picchu (2,430 m / 7,972 ft) before my eyes. For about two hours, I enjoyed a guided tour of this incredible ancient site, exploring temples, houses, palaces, and agricultural fields. I was impressed by the intelligence and ingenuity of the Incas, who built this city without the modern tools we have today.
Thanks to booking my early tickets, I could climb either Huayna Picchu (2,720 m / 8,924 ft) or Machu Picchu Mountain after the guided tour. I chose to climb Huayna Picchu and was amazed by the panoramic views from the top. The climb was challenging, but every effort was worth it.
We will board a bus to return to the small town of Aguas Calientes. This short bus journey lasts about 25 minutes and allows us to enjoy the last views of this beautiful landscape and a delicious lunch.
The time has come to return after five days filled with excitement and challenges; we will head to the train station. The guide will hand us the train tickets. They always recommend arriving at the station at least 30 minutes in advance to avoid any mishaps. The train will take us from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo, and the journey will last approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. During the journey, I could relax and enjoy the last views of the stunning landscape.
Once we arrive at the Ollantaytambo station, our representative will greet us. He was easy to identify by his Salkantay Trekking clothing. From there, we will head back to Cusco on a journey of approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. Depending on the location of your hotel in Cusco, you may use a smaller car from the company to reach your final destination faster.
And thus concludes our unforgettable adventure along the Salkantay Trail to Machu Picchu! It has been an honor to share this travel experience with you, and I hope you are encouraged to experience these fantastic five days full of adventure and discovery in your hearts.
Traveling in a Group
As a solo traveler who experienced the Salkantay hike, being part of a diverse group was one of the best parts of this journey. From the first day, I realized we were surrounded by people of different ages, physical abilities, and cultural backgrounds. Still, we all shared the same passion for adventure and exploration.
Being part of a group tour meant understanding that everyone would have their own pace on the trail. Some walked faster, while others preferred to take their time and enjoy the scenery. The wonderful thing about this was that someone was always nearby to talk to, share experiences, and motivate each other.
I remember that our group desired to modify the itinerary at certain moments during the trip. For example, at one point, some wanted to stop longer to enjoy the panoramic views, while others suggested moving faster to reach the next destination before nightfall. However, our guide was always there to listen to our opinions and make informed decisions that benefited the whole group.
This dynamic of traveling in a group added a unique dimension to the experience. It taught us to be flexible, to respect different paces, and to work together to achieve our goals. In the end, I gained incredible memories of the landscapes we explored and the satisfaction of having shared this adventure with amazing people from all over the world.

If you have the courage and desire to climb the famous mountain that you’ve always seen in the photos behind the Machu Picchu archaeological site, this is your chance! It’s a 45-minute ascent, and the descent can be daunting if you’re afraid of heights. You can do this excursion after your guided tour of Machu Picchu ends. Hello, adventurers! Before we embark on our exciting adventure to Machu Picchu, I want to ensure you are fully prepared and comfortable for the journey. Here are some answers to the most common questions about traveling with Salkantay Trekking:
Is it for me?
The Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu is perfect for adventure lovers seeking an exciting alternative to the Inca Trail. You’ll love this route if you’re a hiker with an adventurous spirit. Although the ascent to the famous Abra Salkantay (at 4,630 m / 15,190 feet) is moderate, it requires stamina and some time in Cusco to acclimatize to the climate before starting the hike.
How many days do I need to acclimate to Cusco?
It’s crucial to acclimatize well to the altitude before starting the hike. I recommend arriving in Cusco at least 2 or 3 days before the start of the hike to adapt to the altitude change and avoid potential altitude sickness issues during the trek.

I recommend attending our informative meeting, where you’ll receive important details about the hike. Additionally, you can enjoy the wonderful views and sounds of Cusco and its surroundings or simply relax and prepare for the adventure that awaits you.
What should I pack in my luggage?
The night before departure, we’ll provide you with a canvas bag to pack the clothes you’ll need during the 5-day hike. Additionally, you’ll need a large daypack to carry your essential personal items during the trip. Don’t worry about your main luggage; we’ll take care of it in our office at no extra cost!
How will customer pickups be handled?
The team will pick you up at your hotel in Cusco. We’ll confirm the pickup time one day before the tour. Please note that the pickup time may vary slightly due to traffic conditions and the city’s characteristics.
