Cusco blooms in June more than ever. During this month, people not only enjoy Cusco’s day itself, but celebrate as well other important events: The Inti Raymi, The Civic Parade, The Andean Corpus Christi or the “Cusco, lights and sound” which is a massive concert at the Plaza de Armas. Also, daily parades occur, concerts at public squares, gastronomic exhibitions, traditional dancing contests and many more.
Every year, EMUFEC (The County Company in charge of the Festivals) publishes a complete schedule with the activities that locals and visitors will enjoy. We have already approximately 175 events that will take place in the City for this 2019. Nevertheless, not only the joy is enormous, the amount of waste produced during these festivals is a subject of matter as well: 40 Tons.
For the first time, plastic usage will be banned
Because of this, EMUFEC will enforce a plan that seeks to protect our mother Earth during the whole month of June. To that end, these authorities programmed several meetings with different entities, which actively participate of the festivals; so they can obtain the “Green Seal”, a certificate that Peru Green Building Council gives for best environmental practices. Also, they will conduct awareness programs about solid waste management with tour operators and traders. In the same way, agents will monitor the plastic usage during the activities with the most public participation.
It is expected that the plastic ban during the traditional Inti Raymi (a huge staging of the Inca Ritual) will have a positive and significant impact on the plan’s success. Let us keep in mind that no less than 80 thousand people attend the Inti Raymi ceremony.
Our Planet is facing a critical environmental crisis that demands an answer from each one of us. Avoid plastic, sort your waste and reuse what is possible. Together we can make it happen.
