Acclimatization is a crucial part of any trek in the high Andes. Cusco and the Salkantay region sit at elevations above 11,000 feet (3,400 meters), where the air is thinner and oxygen levels are lower. Taking time to adjust to the altitude helps prevent altitude sickness and ensures a safer, more enjoyable journey.
