Mount Salkantay & Machupicchu Trek is a great alternative for the Inca Trail trek, better suited for more adventuresome trekkers who are able to handle more altitude and distance. Ascending to reach the famous Apacheta Pass at 4,600m/15,088ft) is not too strenuous since it is at the begiinnig of the trek, neither very steep but requires stamina and time in Cusco to acclimatise.
Climbers should be informed of the risks, symptoms and treatments for altitude sickness. If the ascent is to take place in a remote mountain it is important to be prepared and to take precautions.
We are a specialist adventure tour operator with hundreds of high quality, affordable and exciting adventures to Machu Picchu by Salkantay.

“Salkantay Trekking Company was Brilliant”
Doing the Salkantay Trek was the highlight of a two month South America trip. It is not for the faint of heart, with up to 10 hours of hiking on the second day of the trek. Going with a reputable company is key, since it determines the quality/quantity of your food, the professionalism of your guide, the water impermeability of your tents, etc. We did our trek with Salkantay Trekking Company and had a wonderful experience. It may not be the cheapest operator, but with 4 or 5 days of hiking, you will be happy to have paid for a good service. I would recommend them to anybody, and think that if you have the time, the 5 day option is better than the 4 day option Note that we went during the winter (dry but cold season). It rained/snowed for the first 3 days. Bringing gaiters and a poncho was key to staying dry. Fortunately the rain did not dampen our fantastic experience..
