Salkantay Trek Frequently Asked Questions:

Question: How many days do I need to acclimate before the trek?

It is really important to be well acclimated to the altitude before exerting yourself on a trek.
We do recommend that you arrive in Cuzco at least 2 days before the trek departs to help you become acclimatised to the altitude and avoid possible problems with altitude illness while on trek. All treks from Cuzco gain altitude quickly on the first day(s) with some treks gaining more than 2000m in altitude in a single day and it is important to be well accliamtised before commencing the trek.
It is advisable to have two full days in Cuzco to recover from your travel and to do at least one day hike to higher altitudes help with acclimatization. We can organise day hikes & other tours around Cuzco for you.

If you have already been in another area of Peru at high altitude before arriving in Cuzco, we still recommend you have a complete day in Cuzco to rest, recover from your travel and enjoy the sights and sounds of Cuzco before departing for the trek.
To avoid altitude sickness on the trek, we recommed that you spend time in Cusco or in the Sacred Valley. If you have never been in high altitude, we recommend that you spend a day in the Sacred Valley because it is at lower altitude than Cusco city.

Prevention of altitude sickness

Climbers should be informed of the risks, symptoms and treatments for altitude sickness. If the ascent is to take place in a remote mountain it is important to be prepared and to take precautions.

  • Acclimatization - the best way to prevent altitude sickness is to ascend gradually, so that your body can become acclimatized to the changing altitude. Plan the acclimatization and make sure your trip includes enough time for this. Make sure everyone in the group is fully acclimatized before ascending.
  • Vacation packages - beware of vacation packages that promise to ascend a mountain in just a few days.
  • Fluids - consume between 4 to 6 liters of water per day.
  • Food - eat a high calorie diet while at high altitude.
  • Worsening symptoms - if moderate altitude symptoms worsen you should descend immediately.
  • Sleeping - when your altitude is over 3,000 meters, ascend no more than 300 meters each night. In other words, do not sleep at more than 300 meters higher than you slept the previous night. Even if you ascend more than 300 meters during the day, before going to sleep come back down so that you are no more than 300 meters higher than the night before when you go to sleep.
  • Smoking - do not smoke.
  • Alcohol - do not consume alcoholic drinks.
  • Acetazolamide/Dexamethasone - these medications can also be used to prevent altitude sickness.
  • Moderate symptoms - people with moderate symptoms should stay at their current altitude until their symptoms have gone completely.
  • Other medications - some medications may make symptoms worse while at high altitude, or ascending, including tranquilizers and sleeping pills.

    Why Choose Us!

We are a specialist adventure tour operator with hundreds of high quality, affordable and exciting adventures to Machu Picchu by Salkantay.

There are at least ten good reasons to travel with us:

1.- Unique trekking Routes: Salkantay Trekking specializes in unique, off the beaten track options that most other trek and tour operators do not!

Passenger Report on TRIP ADVISOR

We used Salkantay Trekking Company ( for our Trek to Macchu Picchu. It was absolutely amazing! Edgar and his team were extremely professional and everything was well organised. The food was amazing and the local cook, helper and horseman were a real treat. We were a group of 8 (mixed nationalities) and we all absolutely enjoyed the trek. I would recommend that you book and pay online to avoid dissapointment (2 couples we met in Cusco could not get treks on the days they wanted). The trek itself takes you on a journey through varied landscapes from snow mountains to hot humid jungle and little villages. The second day is the most challenging, hiking up Salkantay peak to an altitude of 4600m. Take Coca leaves!

Passenger Report on LONELY PLANET

We recently completed a 5 day hike on the Salkantay Trek with ( and I have to say that it was a great experience overall. It was nice that our tour guide (wilfredo) and his crew are actual locals which made it a very authentic experience. First of, I was highly impressed by the details provided in preparing us for the journey, everything was on time and well thought out. Secondly, I was amazed by the service provided by the chef along with the rest of the porters. They displayed incredible diligence assisting us with the transportation of our personal belongings and materials for the trek, while getting to the campsite before us to set up our tents and prepare our meals, they were hands down the unsung heroes of the trip! Meanwhile our tour guide Raul was very entertaining and knowledgeable throughout the journey. Overall, the service provided by Salkantay Trekking Company made it a very luxurious journey to the point all that’s left to do is to enjoy every moment with your friends.  I would highly recommend this team they are just an amazing group of people. Thanks.

Is it for Me:

Mount Salkantay & Machupicchu Trek is a great alternative for the Inca Trail trek, better suited for more adventuresome trekkers who are able to handle more altitude and distance. Ascending to reach the famous Apacheta Pass at 4,600m/15,088ft) is not too strenuous since it is at the begiinnig of the trek, neither very steep but requires stamina and time in Cusco to acclimatise.

Our food:

Definitely one of the highlights of the tour is the food. It is always fresh and most of it is organic. There is always a lot to eat and lots of options including vegetables, meat, chicken, fish and other types of protein and carbohydrates. Everyone sits down to eat together and we go out of our way to accomodate all dietary requirements including vegetarian options and any food allergies. We do not provide any alcoholic drinks on the trek but if you would like you can bring your own.

Our Camping Equipment:

We provide 4 man tents for only 2 people and foam mattresses for everyone. Our dining equipment includes a spacious dining tent, tables and chairs, plates and utensils. We do NOT supply sleeping bags, air mattresses or walking sticks, but all can be rented from salkantay trekking. We bring an extra blanket for all our hikers for those especially cold nights. Just ask and your guide will provide you with this.
