Alright, so you might\nbe wondering why you would want to visit a mine, but it\u2019s like no other you\u2019ve\never seen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-bit-of-history\">A Bit of History<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The salt\nmines go a long way back; pre-Inca in fact. They don\u2019t actually look like a\nmine that you would picture in your head. Taking into consideration the process\nof extracting the salt, it\u2019s better to call them salt ponds or pans. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are\nthousands of ponds in total, and they are all still in use today by different\nmembers of the local community. They own them and farm them and sell the salt\nin the city. It appears that the continuation of the traditional methods is the\nmodern population respecting their ancestors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s in the\ntop 10 largest salt mines in the world, and really is a fantastic sight to see.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"920\" height=\"613\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salkantaytrekking.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/bit-history-sacred-valley-salt-mines-maras.jpg\" alt=\"A bit of history of the Salt Mines in Maras, Sacred Valley\" class=\"wp-image-3229\" style=\"width:920px;height:613px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-do-they-work\">How Do They Work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, below\nthe earth sits a single hot and salty spring which leads to a whole advanced\nnetwork of tiny channels. These feed over 6,000 ponds in total, and they seem\nto go on forever. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When a pond\nbecomes full of water, the channel leading to it is blocked. Over many days,\nthe sun will slowly evaporate the water, leaving behind pure salt that is then\nscraped up. The channel is reopened and the whole process starts again. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"920\" height=\"613\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salkantaytrekking.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/how-do-they-work-sacred-valley-salt-mines-maras.jpg\" alt=\"How do Salt Mines of Maras work, Sacred Valley \" class=\"wp-image-3230\" style=\"width:920px;height:613px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-get-there\">How to Get There<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The mines are only around 45 minutes from the city of Cusco, and there are three ways you can reach them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Local Transportation \u2013<\/em> One way, and the most economical,\nis to take the transportation that all the locals take. These tend to be shared\nmini vans and are usually on their way to Urubamba. This means that you will\nneed to let the driver know that you want to get off at Maras. Knowing a little\nSpanish will come in handy here. Once you have gotten off at the entrance to\nMaras, you\u2019ll find taxis that can take you the rest of the way (around another\n15 minutes).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>As Part of a Tour \u2013 <\/em>Another way, and one that most\nvisitors opt for, is to visit as part of a tour. One exists that takes you to\nMaras and Moray. The latter is an Inca archaeological site that is very close\nto Maras, which is why they are paired together. These tours are run every day\nand you\u2019ll find they include a helpful guide who can give you all the\ninformation you need to know about the areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Hire a Car \u2013 <\/em>The other option is to find a taxi and driver\nthat will take you. This is a good option if you want to take your time and\nperhaps stop off at other places. You can inquire as to how much it costs for\nhim to drive you around for a day and you can tailor your own trip. If you see\na nice spot along the way you can stop off for photos or to observe the\nstunning views. The salt here is pink and can add a great zing to\nyour cooking!
