Of course,\nsome things will be like what you know, but there will be a lot of new customs\nfor you to experience and foods to try.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve decided to help you when planning your festive trip and have collected a few of the things you can\u2019t miss out on at this time of year. After all, you want to make the most of it if you\u2019re spending <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salkantaytrekking.com\/blog\/why-you-should-spend-christmas-and-new-year-cusco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Christmas<\/a><\/strong> away from home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Wander Around the Cent<\/strong>er<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As with many cities around the world, there are a lot of lights up around the center. The Plaza de Armas looked absolutely beautiful all lit up in the evenings. Why not enjoy a festive drink on one of the surrounding balconies and appreciate the view. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 23<sup>rd<\/sup> and 24<sup>th<\/sup> of December are also excellent dates to visit the main square. The artisanal fair known as \u2018<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salkantaytrekking.com\/blog\/dont-miss-santurantikuy-famous-christmas-fair-in-cusco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Santuranticuy<\/a><\/strong>\u2019 is held where you will find all sorts of homemade products from potteries, T-shirts, gifts, and a whole lot more. It makes you feel very Christmassy as you walk around and are surrounded by all the locals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll also\nsee that there, and in many places around the city, they sell moss for the\nfloor of people\u2019s nativity scenes as well as baby Jesus and new outfits for his\nwardrobe!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salkantaytrekking.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/wander-around-center-christmas-do.jpg\" alt=\"Wander Around the Centre, Christmas in Qoricancha\" class=\"wp-image-2948\" width=\"920\" height=\"613\"\/><figcaption>Photo by: franshibata<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Enjoy Christmas Eve Mass<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you enjoy going to church or would like to experience a service in the incredible Cathedral in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salkantaytrekking.com\/traditional\/cusco\/city-tour-cusco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Plaza de Armas<\/a><\/strong>, this is a lovely time to visit. At 10 pm on Christmas Eve they hold a mass called \u2018Misa de Gallo\u2019. You\u2019ll find that the Cathedral is absolutely packed to the brim with locals before they head home for a Christmas toast and some food with family. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Chocolatadas<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A very important Christmas tradition in Cusco is the chocolatadas. Many\norganisations come together to hold events and bring festive cheer to those\nless fortunate than them. You\u2019ll see hundreds of people coming from the small\ncommunities that surround Cusco to enjoy themselves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Children enjoy a few mugs of tasty hot chocolate with a piece of bread or\npaneton (the Christmas cake that they commonly eat here). Toys are also often\nhanded out and it\u2019s lovely to see the smiles on their faces. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Celebrate on the 24<sup>th<\/sup> <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In a lot of countries, the 25<sup>th<\/sup> is the main event where we sit down to eat with our families. Well, in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salkantaytrekking.com\/trekking-in-peru\/cusco\/salkantay-trek-4d\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Cusco<\/a><\/strong>, many celebrate more on the 24<sup>th<\/sup>, at midnight! They will pass the evening sipping hot chocolate and having fun as a family before popping open the champagne and enjoying a big dinner at 12 am. Fireworks go off all over the city and it\u2019s really quite exciting to experience it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 25<sup>th<\/sup> is generally quite all over town. Some people will go out to eat, but you won\u2019t find it to be too Christmassy. In some homes, they will be enjoying dinner with their family, but if you want a cosy festive lunch, we suggest heading out to one of the restaurants in the centre or seeing what your hotel has to offer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salkantaytrekking.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/top-things-do-cusco-christmas2.jpg\" alt=\"Celebrate Christmas in Cusco\" class=\"wp-image-2963\" width=\"920\" height=\"613\"\/><figcaption>Photo by: Municipalidad del Cusco<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Try All the Food<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course,\nas with anywhere, there are a few plates that are traditional this time of\nyear. Some partake in a turkey dinner as many of us do, whereas others like to\nenjoy a midnight bowl of chicken broth or even go all out and cook a pig in the\noven (lechon).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are\nall extremely tasty and come with some amazing side dishes, so make sure you\nget to try as much of it as possible if you\u2019re here. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>It\u2019s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>So be sure\nto make the most of your time here and enjoy everything Christmas Cusco has to\noffer. Remember, it won\u2019t be like back home, but you\u2019ll get to take home some\namazing new experiences and see how people celebrate in another part of the\nworld.
