Passport<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is THE\nmost important thing you need to remember. You won\u2019t be able to get into the\nsite without it as your ticket will have the same details as your passport on\nit. It\u2019s also cool to get a stamp in it from Machu Picchu as you enter as a\nsouvenir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-extra-cash\">2. Extra Cash<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You won\u2019t need it inside Machu Picchu but will do if you decide to save any bags in the lockers outside or head to the restaurant up there. A few items are banned from going in now, like snacks, so you may be asked to keep them locked up until you come out again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-water\">3. Water <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Snacks have been banned from <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.salkantaytrekking.com\/traditional\/machu-picchu\/machu-picchu-one-day-tour\/\" target=\"_blank\">Machu Picchu<\/a><\/strong> nowadays due to littering on the ancient site. You are also not allowed to take in water in plastic bottles. However, you can fill up a flask or camelback and take that in no problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will be\nwalking around in the sun for a few hours so we really recommend taking water\nin with you in a reusable, non-plastic container if you can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-camera\">4. Camera<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can\u2019t\ngo to one of the most amazing sights in the world and leave with no photos.\nThere are so many iconic images to capture and you\u2019ll want to make sure you\nremember your trip forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can\ntake any kind of camera in with you, but you need to be careful about extra\nequipment as it probably isn\u2019t allowed inside. If you don\u2019t have a professional\nor handheld camera, your cell phone will do the trick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t\nforget their chargers either as you don\u2019t want to be caught short and not\ncapture a picture just when you get to the perfect spot because the battery is\ngone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-bug-spray\">5. Bug Spray<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is one of the most important items that you really need to double-check is in your day pack. The bugs aren\u2019t dangerous, but man, will they bite! It\u2019s not rare to see visitors wandering around Cusco in shorts with a minimum of 50 bug bites all over their legs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can ruin the rest of your day, and the few that follow. They are extremely itchy and can stop you concentrating on the more important parts of your trip. Be sure to buy and pack a spray or cream high in DEET and of good quality, otherwise, you\u2019ll be spending more on anti-itching spray afterward!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-sun-protection\">6. Sun Protection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This\nincludes everything you need to help protect your eyes and skin from the hot\nCusco sun. Remember that you are at a higher altitude here so the sun can burn\nand do damage a lot quicker than at lower levels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will need to make sure you have a high-factor sunscreen, some polarized sunglass, and a wide-brimmed hat. We\u2019re not being over the top. You really should be taking good care of your skin when you are so close to the sun&#8217;s rays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"920\" height=\"613\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salkantaytrekking.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/essential-items-should-be-taking-machu-picchu-2.jpg\" alt=\"Essential Items You Must Pack for Your Trip to Machu Picchu\" class=\"wp-image-2831\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-thin-clothes\">7. Thin Clothes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the year you\u2019ll find that Machu Picchu is very sunny and can be hot. First thing in the morning, not so much, but it soon warms up. You\u2019ll be walking around a lot of the time so it will get even hotter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a good idea to have some thin long trousers and a long-sleeved shirt. This is, again, to avoid bug bites but to keep you cool at the same time. Shorts and t-shirt can be used, but beware of the bugs and sunburn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-8-comfortable-footwear\">8. Comfortable Footwear<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of you\nmay be going to Machu Picchu for the day and then heading back to Cusco, and\nsome of you may have been on a trek for days before visiting. Whichever one you\ndo, you\u2019ll want to have comfy shoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hiking boots can be used, but aren\u2019t necessary. You won\u2019t be walking over a lot of difficult terrains like on a trek, and you\u2019ll be on your feet for hours on end, so the perfect sneakers and comfy socks are a must.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-9-light-waterproof\">9. Light Waterproof<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you get to the top and the sun is shining brightly, that doesn\u2019t mean that rain isn\u2019t on the cards. The weather in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salkantaytrekking.com\/traditional\/cusco\/city-tour-cusco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Cusco<\/a><\/strong> is highly unpredictable and it\u2019s ALWAYS a good idea to have some waterproofs on you, whether it be a raincoat or a poncho.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure\nit\u2019s not heavy as you may be carrying it in your daypack all day. However, you\nshould have one, just in case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-10-swimming-suit\">10. Swimming Suit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you get\nto Aguas Calientes the day before the visit to Machu Picchu, you will likely\nhave some time to visit the hot springs in the town. They are very relaxing\nafter a few days of trekking and are a welcome rest for anyone who\u2019s been\ntouring Cusco for a few days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll also\nget a chance for a dip after the morning tour of Machu Picchu. You are going to\nbe hot and sweaty, so an hour or so in the relaxing springs is the perfect\ntreat before you head back to Cusco. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be sure to\npack a towel, comb, and bags for wet clothes if you do decide to get in the\nwater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pack-light\">Pack Light<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These are all the <strong><a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.salkantaytrekking.com\/blog\/things-you-need-for-traveling-to-peru-what-to-wear\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">essential items<\/a><\/strong><a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.salkantaytrekking.com\/blog\/things-you-need-for-traveling-to-peru-what-to-wear\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <\/a>you need to have in your bag when visiting Machu Picchu.
