This time of year in <strong>Cusco<\/strong> will likely be very different from what you are used to back home, but it can be a great experience.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a few <strong>traditions<\/strong> and things we recommend you try out to make the most of your time here.<strong> <\/strong>Christmas away from home doesn\u2019t need to be difficult. Soak up the atmosphere of this marvelous city and enjoy what\u2019s on offer. Also, plan ahead as the city can get rather busy and you don\u2019t want to miss out on Christmas dinner at a fancy restaurant or spending New Year\u2019s Day at <strong><a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.salkantaytrekking.com\/blog\/dont-have-much-time-in-cusco-take-advantage-of-the-2-day-inca-trail-and-visit-machu-picchu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Machu Picchu<\/a><\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salkantaytrekking.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/enjoy-new-year.jpg\" alt=\"enjoy-new-year\" class=\"wp-image-2303\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Enjoy the New Year. Photo by: Anthony Scott<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-christmas-traditions\"><strong>Christmas Traditions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As with any country, there are many traditions associated with Christmas. The 24th is actually the main event here, and the 25th can seem quite deserted around town. If you want to celebrate as the locals do, you\u2019ll have to stay up till midnight on the 24<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve made it till then, you\u2019ll usually enjoy a toast and some soup, or even<strong> turkey<\/strong>! That\u2019s right. A turkey dinner at 12am! You\u2019ll also hear<strong> <\/strong>fireworks<strong> <\/strong>being set off all over the city. It\u2019s quite exciting actually, and if you\u2019re in a place with festive decorations, and can feel really nice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some families may also start the evening off with some <strong>paneton<\/strong>, a <strong>fruity Christmas cake<\/strong>, and hot <strong>chocolate<\/strong> to warm you up for the evening. The 25<sup>th<\/sup> is often spent getting over the night before and eating leftovers.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"612\" height=\"612\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salkantaytrekking.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/eat-turkey-paneton-night-December-christmas.jpg\" alt=\"eat-turkey-paneton-night-December-christmas\" class=\"wp-image-2304\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">You can eat turkey or paneton on the night of December 24th. Photo by: :@Dee<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-santurantikuy\"><strong>Santurantikuy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is one of our favorite traditions. Every year on the 23<sup>rd<\/sup> and 24<sup>th<\/sup> of December, the main square (<strong>Plaza de Armas<\/strong>) is full of stalls selling all kinds of <strong><a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.salkantaytrekking.com\/blog\/celebrations-you-shouldnt-miss-during-the-rest-of-the-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">artisan goods<\/a><\/strong>, Christmas gifts and decorations, and other interesting pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether you buy anything or not, it can be really interesting just to wander around and taste a few of the treats also on offer. Photo by: @pinkysmile0415 <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-nativity-scenes\"><strong>Nativity Scenes<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>All over <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salkantaytrekking.com\/trekking-in-peru\/cusco\/salkantay-trek-4d\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cusco<\/a><\/strong> in December you\u2019ll see nativity scenes, or people selling pieces to put in them. In the main plaza and a few other spots, there are life-size ones made up. Photo by: ANDINA \/ Percy Hurtado<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-new-year-s-eve\"><strong>New Year\u2019s Eve<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cusco<\/strong> probably has the craziest parties in all of <strong>Peru<\/strong>, and when better to party than at<strong> New Year<\/strong>. All the pubs, bars, and clubs hold special events and often charge a hefty fee for entry. From early on in the evening you\u2019ll see people gathering in the <strong>Plaza de Armas<\/strong> with friends and family. A lot of them will be enjoying some beers and even setting off fireworks from early evening onwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a few traditions, too. One being that yellow is supposed to be lucky and if you wear something of that color you\u2019ll have good luck for the entire next year to come. Because of these all over the plaza and roads leading up to it, there are locals selling all kinds of yellow items. These can range from novelty glasses, Hawaiian garlands, and even yellow underwear!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the clock hits 12 it goes crazy. The plaza is full to the brim with people and fireworks are set off all over the city, just like at Christmas. Everyone is bursting with cheer and it\u2019s a great atmosphere. You may see a few people whip out some grapes too. 12 to be exact. Photo by: Inka Team<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-new-year-s-day\"><strong>New Year\u2019s Day<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A lot of people may be feeling worse for wear this day, but you\u2019ll still see lots of people out and about. No one wants to cook so they all head out to eat in restaurants. A very popular and <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.salkantaytrekking.com\/blog\/gastronomy-in-cusco-7-famous-foods-you-must-try\/\" target=\"_blank\">traditional food<\/a><\/strong> this day is <strong>Lechon<\/strong>. It\u2019s roasted pork served with a tamale, potatoes, and sometimes other traditional side dishes. It\u2019s <strong>very tasty<\/strong>!
