In <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.salkantaytrekking.com\/trekking-in-peru\/cusco\/salkantay-trek-4d\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cusco<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s case, dance is one of the <strong>traditions<\/strong> that boasts the most color, charm, and magic. Taking into account that <strong>Folklore Day<\/strong> is celebrated around the world on August 22<sup>nd<\/sup>, we\u2019ll take a look at some of the dances that are present in most of the traditional celebrations in <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.salkantaytrekking.com\/trekking-in-peru\/cusco\/salkantay-trek-4d\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cusco<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-yoast-seo-table-of-contents yoast-table-of-contents anchor-links\"><ul><li><a href=\"#h-wallatas\" data-level=\"2\">WALLATAS<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-saqra\" data-level=\"2\">SAQRA<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-carnaval-cusqueno\" data-level=\"2\">CARNAVAL CUSQUE\u00d1O<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-tupay\" data-level=\"2\">TUPAY<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#h-danza-majeno\" data-level=\"2\">DANZA MAJE\u00d1O<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-wallatas\">WALLATAS<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The protagonists of this dance put strength and energy in every step of the dance. This traditional dance comes from the province of <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.salkantaytrekking.com\/traditional\/cusco\/sacred-valley\/\" target=\"_blank\">Urubamba<\/a><\/strong>. It demonstrates the relation between man and nature because wallatas are birds that live on the lakes found in this area. The dancers represent the birds with choreography imitating their wings flapping with the objective of making women <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salkantaytrekking.com\/trekking-in-peru\/cusco\/salkantay-machu-picchu-honeymoon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">fall in love<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salkantaytrekking.com\/trekking-in-peru\/cusco\/salkantay-machu-picchu-honeymoon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\"> <\/a>with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The beautiful women that dance do so elegantly\nwithout losing the strength and energy that characterize them.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"682\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salkantaytrekking.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Wallatas-dancers-colourful-costumes-682x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Wallatas dancers have colorful costumes\n\" class=\"wp-image-1714\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Dancers with colourful costumes put strength and energy into the dance.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-saqra\">SAQRA<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This dance can be seen during the Virgin of Carmen or <strong>\u201cMamacha Carmen\u201d <\/strong>festivities in the province of Paucartambo. However, you can usually spot it during other major events in <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.salkantaytrekking.com\/trekking-in-peru\/cusco\/salkantay-trek-4d\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cusco<\/a><\/strong> too. The Saqras are full of color and add the biggest aspect of fun to the festivities. The name means naughty devil and you\u2019ll see them living up to their name during the dance and playing with the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not difficult to spot the Saqras as they\nuse clothes that are so colorful and eye-catching masks that represent animals\nlike cats, pigs, and roosters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the <strong>Virgin of Carmen festivities<\/strong>, the <strong>Saqras<\/strong> can actually be seen being naughty in the rooves of houses and on the balconies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salkantaytrekking.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Saqras-full-color-fun-festivities-1024x720.jpg\" alt=\"Saqras are full color and add fun to the festivities\" class=\"wp-image-1715\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Saqras are full of color and add the biggest aspect of fun to the festivities. Photo by: @karinamchfoto<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-carnaval-cusqueno\">CARNAVAL CUSQUE\u00d1O<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Carnaval (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.salkantaytrekking.com\/blog\/comadres-a-festival-to-celebrate-friendships-with-women\/\" target=\"_blank\">Carnaval<\/a><\/strong> is one of the happiest festivals celebrated at an international level around the globe and in <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.salkantaytrekking.com\/trekking-in-peru\/cusco\/salkantay-trek-4d\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cusco<\/a><\/strong> they enjoy a special way of celebrating. One of the dances that boast elegance during this season is the <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.salkantaytrekking.com\/trekking-in-peru\/cusco\/salkantay-trek-4d\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cusco<\/a><\/strong> Carnaval dance.&nbsp; In this mixed color dance, the men and women sing happy songs. Tupay is a word in <strong>Quechua<\/strong> that means meeting, specifically the courting meeting between a single woman and a single man. During the dance, we can see young men, dressed in big outfits that are full of color, flirting with the pretty women and trying to make them <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.salkantaytrekking.com\/trekking-in-peru\/cusco\/salkantay-machu-picchu-honeymoon\/\" target=\"_blank\">fall in love<\/a><\/strong> with them. Meanwhile, the women show that they don\u2019t fall in love that easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>traditional<\/strong> dance of Tupay has been declared a<strong> Cultural Patrimony<\/strong> of the nation for its original character, seniority, and richness of its meaning, as well as its aesthetics in dress, music, and dance moves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"753\" src=\"https:\/\/www.salkantaytrekking.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Tupay-courting-meeting-1024x753.jpg\" alt=\"The courting meeting between a woman and a man\" class=\"wp-image-1717\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The courting meeting between a woman and a man.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-danza-majeno\">DANZA MAJE\u00d1O<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is one dance that is never missing from a festival in <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.salkantaytrekking.com\/trekking-in-peru\/cusco\/salkantay-trek-4d\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cusco<\/a><\/strong>. What grabs your attention the most are the masks because they boast exaggerated expressions and huge noses. They often cause a lot of laughter and amazement to those seeing the dance for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Maje\u00f1o<\/strong> represents the old merchants from the Majes zone in <strong>Arequipa<\/strong> who used to come to <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.salkantaytrekking.com\/trekking-in-peru\/cusco\/salkantay-trek-4d\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cusco<\/a><\/strong>, especially to the Paucartambo province.
