Machu Picchu Wonder<\/p><\/div>\n

The more strenuous and less crowded Salkantay trekking<\/strong><\/a> is becoming a more attractive option for trekkers headed to Machu Picchu.<\/p>\n

For years, Peru\u2019s most well researched travelers have known of the \u201cother trail\u201d to Machu Picchu: the Salkantay<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Today however, as the more popular Inca Trail<\/strong> has become overcrowded<\/strong>, it appears that the Salkantay is making a name for itself.<\/p>\n

According to the BBC<\/span>, \u201cthe lesser-known Salkantay Trek is quickly gaining a reputation as both a less-crowded and more strenuous alternative.\u201d<\/p>\n

The BBC<\/span> declares that \u201cmind-blowing visuals\u201d and \u201cvariety of ecosystems\u201d seen on the alternative trail are worth the extra pain and sweat.<\/p>\n

Those who brave the trek reach 4,650m, the highest point of the hike, the Salkantay pass. According to the BBC<\/span>, \u201c\u2018Salkantay\u2019 is a Quechua word, meaning \u2018Savage Mountain.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

On the Salkantay, trekkers \u201cfollow in the footsteps of the highly trained Inca messengers\u201d through \u201ccloud forests and alpine peaks to glacial lakes and tropical<\/strong> jungles\u201d to arrive at the of the journey, \u201cthe ancient site of Machu Picchu.\u201d<\/p>\n
